Let me back up a bit.

I wasn’t in pain, but I knew I was in trouble.

It was halfway through my third set of deadlifts when I felt the “pop” in my lower back.
I was thirty-nine, balancing family, kids, and the needs of a growing business.
My health had taken a backseat. Low energy levels and motivation to train made workouts sporadic and unfocused. 

I cut corners–avoiding “boring stuff” like warmups, mobility, and aerobic training. 

My body wasn’t responding the way it used to.
There were the occasional red flags, signals that something wasn’t working. 

Something had to change…then it did. 
I herniated a disc in my lower back.
It’s like that line from Hemingway about bankruptcy; it happens “gradually and then suddenly.”
Gradually are the achy joints and stiff muscles; the extra beat it takes standing up after sitting in a chair.
Suddenly? When you find yourself hunched over in pain, unable to stand up straight. 
I felt weak and broken. 

I knew there had to be a better way.

So, I set out to find it. 

I immersed myself in the science, reading thousands of pages of scientific literature, traveling around the country attending conferences and courses, learning from the top coaches and therapists in the world. 
Brining the is knowledge back, my team and I field-tested various systems and methods on ourselves and our clients.

What did we discover? 
Although many different fields–from bodybuilding to exercise science to physical therapy–have shone their flashlights into different parts of this cave, the work is siloed and incomplete. 
And this puts us in a rather unusual position. 
Nobody has connected the dots to form a cohesive narrative–let alone produce a practical framework to apply it.  
Until now.
Based on what we learned, I completely changed my approach to exercise, and my body responded in ways I couldn’t believe.
